Revolut crypto after a death: what happens and how to claim

Last reviewed: October 2026

In short

Revolut doesn’t hand crypto over to heirs. It sells it, adds the money to the deceased’s main balance and pays that out to the heir or their solicitor, to an account at any bank. You start by emailing [email protected]. Revolut aims to reply within 15 days; the whole process can take anything from a few days to a year.

Crypto is sold, not transferred

Revolut’s bereavement page says “any stocks, precious metals, or cryptocurrency that the deceased had bought will be liquidated” and the value credited to the main balance (Revolut Help). Its crypto terms list “You have died” among the reasons crypto services end, after which Revolut may sell the holdings at the rate at the time, subject to fees (UK crypto terms, EEA crypto terms).

Two consequences:

  • The heirs can’t choose to keep the coins. If they want crypto, they buy it again themselves.
  • The sale price is the price on the day Revolut sells, not on the date of death. For inheritance tax the estate still needs the value on the date of death; ask Revolut for a statement and see Valuing crypto at the date of death.

Staking rewards that fall due after the customer has been “off-boarded from the Revolut app” are waived and kept by Revolut (crypto terms, section 9).

Who can claim

The heir, the executor, or a solicitor or notary acting with power of attorney. You don’t need a Revolut account: the payout goes to a “nominated account” at any bank, held in the claimant’s name or the name of the solicitor acting for them.

The documents

  • About the deceased: full legal name, date of birth, and the phone number and email linked to Revolut.
  • About you: full name, email address and your relationship to the deceased.
  • Your ID or passport: a good-quality copy with all four corners visible.
  • Proof that you may deal with the estate. In the UK: a grant of probate or letters of administration. Revolut’s Dutch page asks for a verklaring van erfrecht, its German page for an Erbschein, Testamentsvollstreckerzeugnis or another court proof of inheritance.
  • The death certificate. Depending on where the person lived, Revolut may accept an interim or coroner’s certificate, or an authorised translation of an overseas certificate.
  • The signed bereavement and indemnity form (PDF), which includes the bank details for the payout, a declaration that you have the other beneficiaries’ consent to receive the money on their behalf, and an indemnity making you responsible for any loss Revolut suffers by following your instructions. If there are several heirs, agree the split before you sign.
  • If a solicitor is acting: the power of attorney.

Step by step

  1. Email [email protected] with what you have. “We only communicate about bereavement cases via email.”
  2. Revolut cancels scheduled payments and paid plans, terminates the cards and stops marketing.
  3. Revolut replies, “within 15 days”, with what else it needs.
  4. Once it’s satisfied, Revolut sells the investments, including the crypto, and pays the balance to the nominated account.

How long it takes

From the first email to the account being closed “may take from a few days to a year”, depending on how complicated the case is and whether court proceedings are ongoing. Revolut’s German page also mentions outstanding loans.

Good to know

  • Revolut only uses email for bereavement cases. A call or chat message claiming to be Revolut’s bereavement team is not. Recovery scams.
  • Coins sent out of Revolut earlier aren’t in the account. If the person withdrew crypto to their own wallet, the estate claim doesn’t cover it. Look for a hardware wallet or seed phrase: Finding out what they had.
