In short
On Binance.com, heirs use the Inheritance Appeal (Legacy Inheritance) from their own Binance account. Binance says it usually takes one to two months. Binance.US is a separate company with its own process: you collect the documents, record a short selfie video and contact support by chat or phone.
Binance.com
Before you start
- You need your own Binance account. “Please make sure you’ve created your own Binance account before you start the process” (Binance FAQ).
- You need one identifier of the deceased’s account: their email address, phone number or Binance ID. “Providing any one of these will be sufficient.”
- The claim depends on legal documents. Binance says it is “subject to the applicable laws and terms and conditions, as well as the provision of legally valid inheritance documents”.
The documents
Binance doesn’t publish a fixed list on its help page. The appeal form asks you to attach “all relevant materials and documents”. In practice, have these ready:
- The death certificate.
- The document that shows who inherits or who may act for the estate: a grant of probate, letters testamentary, a certificate of inheritance or a European Certificate of Succession, depending on the country.
- The will, if there is one.
- Your own ID.
- Translations into English of anything in another language. Binance’s page doesn’t promise it will accept documents in other languages.
The form may ask for more. Read its instructions before uploading.
Step by step
- Log in to your own Binance account.
- Go to Customer Support, then View All under Self Service, then Legacy Inheritance under Account. The FAQ also links to the form directly.
- Enter the deceased’s email, phone number or Binance ID.
- Attach the documents and submit.
- Binance reviews the appeal.
What you receive, and when
Binance says “the deceased’s assets will be transferred to the rightful beneficiary or trustee after confirming the application details”. It doesn’t say whether that’s crypto or cash, or how several heirs are handled; ask in the appeal if the will divides the account.
Timing: “It usually takes around 1 – 2 months to complete the process, but sometimes it may take longer in more complex cases.”
The Emergency Contact setting
News reports from June 2025 describe a Binance setting that lets a user name an emergency contact who is told when the account goes quiet (Cointelegraph). That contact still has to use the Inheritance Appeal; the setting doesn’t give access to the funds. Binance’s help centre didn’t document the feature when we checked. Binance.US
Binance.US is run by a separate US company, BAM Trading Services, and has its own process (Binance.US Help).
- A selfie video of the person making the claim “stating the preferred method of transfer of the deceased user’s assets”.
- A digital copy of the death certificate.
- Government ID or passport of that same person.
- The will and/or probate documents: probate, letters testamentary, letters of administration, an affidavit for collection or a small estate affidavit.
Send each as a PDF or a corner-to-corner photo. With everything ready, contact support: by live chat on the website or app (every day, 6 a.m. to midnight US Eastern time), or by phone on +1 (844) 900-1450 (Monday to Friday, 9 a.m. to 7 p.m. Eastern) (contact options).
The Terms say Binance.US freezes the account when it “has reason to believe you have died”, and that the transfer may depend on the representative being able to open a Binance.US account. They also say “BAM does not commit to any particular timeline” (Terms of Use).
Watch out
- Binance and Binance.US are not interchangeable. Check which one the person used: emails, bank statements and the app on their phone will tell you.
- Fake Binance support is common on Telegram, X and in search ads. Binance.US says its team will never call you, message you unprompted, ask for your password or security codes, or ask you to send funds to an external wallet. Recovery scams.
